Entry #14: Public Transit Part 1: Easy to Use

Good day fellow bloggers and internet surfers. Today I will be discussing the positives of using public transit and what the benefits are. There will  a time to ask me questions about the second part of this blog, which will be coming out this evening. Let us begin the look at public transit and the positives and the benefits of using public transit. To begin I will look at

Kitchener-Waterloo Routes

Introduction
In the Waterloo Region, which is comprised of Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo and the townships. In Kitchener-Waterloo there is one source of transportation that helps many people, that is the Grand River Transit, or GRT for short. GRT has been in operation since 2000 and has continued to impress myself and others within the region. Kitchener-Waterloo has routes from the numbers 1-32 and 6 express routes, 3 being Conestoga College express routes. First I will look at the non-express routes like for example route 25 Queen South (to Forest Heights via Queen Street). These routes are very easy to board and the cost is cheap as well. Unlike the express routes, these routes stop at every stop to make sure that the person or people get to their destination safely, they also can help in making connections with the express routes at certain stops. For example, route 1 Stanley Park to Downtown (via River Rd. or Lorraine Ave.) will arrive at the major downtown transit terminal to help with making connections with the iXpress to Conestoga Mall in Waterloo or to Ainslie St. Terminal in Cambridge. The iXpress routes (200, 201, 202 and coming soon 203) have limited stops along the specific corridors they travel. For example, route 201 Fischer-Hallman iXpress travels from Conestoga Mall transit terminal to Forest Glen transit terminal in Kitchener via Columbia St. and Fischer-Hallman Rd. The iXpress routes are very quick and they also help with connections at certain stops which overlap with another route or at a major transit terminal. The stops are convenient and easy to spot. The destination sign for each of the routes will be different, for example if a person wants to get to Fairview from Charles St. terminal, they can take either the 7 to Fairview via Cannaught, via Weber, or via Wilson or the 8 Fairview via Franklin or 8 Fairview via Courtland or the 200 iXpress to Ainslie St. Transit terminal.

Rush Hour Routes
There are also industrial routes that operate to and from a certain terminal out to an industrial park in Waterloo and in Kitchener, those routes are, for Waterloo route 14 Bathurst (to Wayman and Colby) from Conestoga Mall transit terminal, route 32 to Kumpf (to Kumpf Dr. and Weber and Northfield) then returning to Conestoga Mall via Northfield Dr. and Conestogo Rd. but these services operate during the peak periods (during Rush-Hour) there are also peak period routes as well, for example route 19 Victoria South operates to and from Highland Hills transit terminal to Charles St. transit terminal in downtown Kitchener along the Victoria Street corridor (via Highland Rd., Eastforest Tr. Bankside Dr., Westforest Tr., Victoria St. S., Hazelglen Dr., Westmount Rd., King St. E, and Guakel St.) but this is a rush hour service, an alternative would be route 20 Victoria Hills, which follows the same routing except it goes into the Victoria Hills neighbourhood and down Fischer-Hallman Rd. to Highland Hills terminal. Route 33 Huron travels from Forest Glen terminal in Kitchener to the Huron industrial park (Trillium Dr.) to the Huron villiage (Parkvale Dr., Woodbine Ave. and Huron Rd.). This route has 3 different options, in the AM peak periods, it travels to the Huron village via Trillium Drive then returning to Forest Glen terminal via Strasburg Rd. From 2:15pm to 3:00pm, route 33 travels via Trillium to Groff Pl. then returning to Forest Glen. From 3:15-6:15pm it travels to Huron village via Strasburg Rd. then return to Forest Glen via Trillium Dr. Routes 9 Lakeshore and 31 Columbia  are  alternatives for routes 14 Bathurst and 32 Kumpf as route 16  Forest Glen is an alternative to route 33 Huron. Route 23 Idlewood during the AM and PM peak periods operates to Fairview Park Mall transit terminal and Charles St. terminal via Idlewood. There are 2 alternatives to this route, the routes are route 17 Heritage Park (to Victoria St and Lackner Blvd) and route 27 Chicopee (Quinte Cr at Morrison Rd).

Mainline Routes
There are 5 mainline routes in Kitchener, Waterloo and they are route 7 Mainline, route 8 University-Fairview Park, 200 iXpress Conestoga Mall-Ainslie St. Terminal, 201 iXpress Conestoga Mall-Forest Glen, and the 202 iXpress the Boardwalk-Conestoga Mall. These routes cover the majority of Kitchener and Waterloo, for instance, route 7 Covers all of King St from Fairview Park to Conestoga mall, but there are also the 7's which operate to the University of Waterloo (7D UW via University Ave. and 7E UW via Columbia). What I really like about the 7 is that they are easy to understand and what changes into what. Example 7F Fairview Park via Wilson arrives at Fairview and changes into the 7D UW via University. 7C Conestoga Mall becomes the 7B Fairview Park via Weber (from 9am-5:15pm Monday to Friday) during the Peak Periods the 7C becomes the 7A Fairview via Cannaught at 10 and 40 am and the 7F at 25 and 55 am. The 8's are the same way, what comes up University via Weber will go back as Franklin and visversa. the 201 and 202 interline at Conestoga Mall transit terminal.

iXpress
Since 2006, GRT has implemented 3 express routes that have helped move a lot of  people. These express routes are very handy and coming from a person that uses GRT on a daily basis, I really enjoy the scenery, espcially on the iXpress routes. the i in the iXpress stands for intelleigence, in which there is a little bar in front of the bus and it announces the next stop. In 2012-2013, all the routes have the stop announcers and it announces the stop, the date and time. Which is quite handy for the passengers.

Final Thought
I have been a customer of Grand River Transit since I was in high school (back in 2006-2007) and I have been very very impressed with the drivers and the routes. As a current Conestoga College student, I really like the 110 Fairview Express, but the 203 can help the 110 if it does begin at Fairview Park mall because the 110, everyone wants to take because it is the only express to Fairview, the alternative is the 10 (which takes 20 min, which is pretty good). I am always going to be using Grand River Transit, I personally know 1 driver, I have known her since she was driving school buses (yeah I was 10 yrs old) I do hope to see her driving the 1, 23, 10, or 110.

Entry #13 The Past Part 2

Today, we will analyze the final film in the two-part blog about the past. In this final blog about the past, the film that is going to analyzed is Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End. In this film, Jack Sparrow's friends try to rescue him from Davy Jones locker and try to end Cutler Becket and the East India Trading Company's control of the sea.

Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End: How to Over come the Past

This film has many themes, one of the major themes is betrayal. A person's past can cause the friends and loved ones of that person to question their friend. The film's first feature of betrayal is Willam Turner Jr. and Sao Feng in Singapore. Will wants the Black Pearl to free his father from the miserable life aboard the Flying Dutchman, Sao Feng just wants to join the "winning" side. Feng decides to betray his fellow pirates and go straight to Becket and tell him valuable information. But after that Jack's friends they just want him back in the world because he is the one person that will be facing his past: Davy Jones and Cutler Becket. But first Jack's friends must get him out of Davy Jones Locker and bring him back to the world of the living.  To find Davy Jones locker you have to be lost in order to find it, other wise everyone would know where it is. This is very important, in order to find some happiness in your past, you have to be lost in order to find it. In this case, that happiness for the past in the film is Captain Jack Sparrow. After they get into Davy Jones locker (over a waterfall) because Davy Jones never gave up what he lost. So they find Jack, but there is one problem, how to get out of Davy Jones locker? It is very simple, Up is Down. This does sound very unhelpful but keep this in mind, when the sun sets in Davy Jones locker, it will rise in the land of the living. So what Jack comes up with is to flip the Black Pearl upside down and it will rise up from the depths to the land of the living. So The Pearl does rise up after Jack and his friends flip it upside down. Captain Jack is back to face his past, but he is very hesitant to face it, but there is an organization that will help Jack, and that organization is the Brethen Court. This is where all the pirate Lords from the different edges of the world meet. Jack and Barbossa are a few of them, they do have one person on their side, they have Calypso, who is, Davy Jones's love in which he cut out his heart for her. They gather the nine peices of eight and release Calypso, she mocks them then returns to the sea. At that moment, the enemy (Becket and Jones) got ready for the battle. Jack is traded to Jones and locked in the bridge aboard the Flying Dutchman, so he breaks out to face his past. He faces Jones, they duel swards on one of the masts on the Dutchman, Jack seems he will win, but there is a tragic loss, Davy Jones stabs Will Turner Jr. in the heart, so Jack does the noble action, he places Davy Jones's heart beside Will, and with Will's last action, he stabs the heart. Jones is defeated and has been released of his duty as Captain. As Jack escapes with Will's wife, Elizabeth, they watch as the Dutchman goes down. Becket see's the Pearl as a sitting duck, no guns are out, no nothing. He gets his ship ready to eliminate Jack and the following quote is said "It's nothing personal Jack, it's just good business" at that moment, the Dutchman has returned, but it is not on Becket's side, it is on the pirates side and Jacks side, because, Will stabbed the heart of Davy Jones, thus, Will Turner Jr is the new captain of the Flying Dutchman, then Jack gives the order to load the cannons. The Dutchman and the Pearl corner Becket and blow it to Davy Jones Locker.

Final Thought
You cannot face your past by yourself, you need help if it comes with back up. You do not need an entire army, and what not to take it down, your past is your past, only you can look it in the eye and make sure it goes back down and never comes up again, like Becket and Davy Jones. Then you are "free" from your past, because you faced it, looked it in the eye and said I am not scared of you, I know what will happen, you cannot take be back with you, I have moved on and have begun to improve myself and my life.

That is my look on the past by film analysis by looking at Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.

Entry #12: The Past Part 1

For this blog post, I will be analyzing the two films that are very connected to the subject of the past and how to over come it. The first film I will look at an analyze is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. This film shows us that our deals in the past can come back to haunt us, every decision we make in the past with certain people can come back to haunt us in the present. The next film I will analyze is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and it will show us how to stand up to our past and how to look at it, keep it down or destroy it to help us create a new future with the people that are in our lives. This blog is a two-part blog, today I will talk about looking at your past and how it can come back and haunt you for the decisions you made and tomorrow I will talk about how to face your past and how to get the best of it.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest: Why The Past comes back to Haunt Us

In the film Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, Captain Jack Sparrow has a debt to pay to Davy Jones who is the ruler of the seven seas and captain of the horrifying ghost ship the Flying Dutchman. In this film, we learn that thirteen years ago, Jack and a deal with Jones, to raise the Black Pearl from the depths and Jack would be captain of the it. Unfortunately, Jack was only captain for two years before his first mate, Barbossa planned a mutiny and left Jack on an island to die. This shows that, a young Jack Sparrow made a deal with the devil, and now, his debt has to be repaid. The deal from the film was as follows: Jack will be captain of the Black Pearl for thirteen years, then after the thirteen years he will go aboard the Flying Dutchman and serve one hundred years before the mast. Jack knows this from the beginning of the film, so he tries to find a very special chest, a chest that does not have any treasure like silver, gold and diamonds, but what a man treasures the most, his heart. Jack is trying to find Davy Jones's chest, which contains his still beating heart. There is a very good quote from the film when Jack and his new first mate Gibbs are talking, they find the Letters of Marc signed by Lord Cutler Becket, who Jack also made a deal with, but never did the deal. Becket also wants the chest of Davy Jones, but not for settling debts, Becket wants to control the seas, by any means necessary. At this point in the film, Jack visits and old friend Tia Dalma, who gives Jack some advice and a jar of dirt. The dirt is very symbolic in the film, Davy Jones cannot step on land, but once every ten (10) years. So Jack goes and finds a ship wreak, sends William Turner to "settle" his debt, but that ship wreak is not the Dutchman. Soon the Dutchman does appear, and these sea creatures appear, the get the dying sailors in a line, that is when Davy Jones comes in and offers them to serve on the Dutchman or go to the crushing abyss known as Davy Jones Locker. Turner tells Jones Jack sent him to settle his debt, Jones is not pleased at this point, he appears on the deck of the Pearl along with his crew, Jack negotiates with him, the final deal Jones gives Jack. Jack needs to get one hundred souls, in three days. Jack sets off the find the chest of Davy Jones and to make Jones pay off the debt. Unfortunately Jack fails, and Jack does not get the heart of Davy Jones, the Black Pearl is dragged back underwater to Davy Jones locker by Davy Jones's pet, the Kraken. The person that does get the heart of Davy Jones is Cutler Becket, now the pirates and other sailors are in trouble. Becket has control over Davy Jones AND the Flying Dutchman, as what Gibbs told Jack "If Becket controls the chest, they control the sea."

The Final Thought
If you have had a rough past, do not run from it. Stand up and face it, look it in the eye and say, yes I have made bad decisions but I have learned from those mistakes. If you choose to keep running from your past, it will hurt those who you love and care about and it will also decide what will happen if you keep running.

Entry #11: The Double Ended Sward

The past two days have not been the greatest for myself. All though this has happened to me before, I will not let it get to me. What has happened has occurred for a reason, I have moved on onto something better.

Today's discussion is on social media and why it can be used as a double ended sward for everyone, and not just for the young people.

Social Media: The Double Ended Sward.

Facebook, Twitter, Instigram and many other are among the many social media media websites people are using today. What they do not know is that once something is posted, it stays on the site forever, even if they remove it from their home page or their wall on the site. This is the one side that people do not see in social media. What people post on their pages can be used against them, like for example, you are trying to find a part-time job and are trolling people on Facebook and making them upset. The employers are going into Google and typing in your name to see what comes up. For instance, they Google your name and see pictures of the person drinking and using recreational drugs, that can be a big reason why they do not call you back in for the final interview or to say you have gotten the position.

The other dark side to social media is even if you post something positive and someone tries to begin an argument, profanity and threats are exchanged between parties. This is another end to that sward, you cannot win when you are on social media, you can never win, unless you are ready enough to back away and leave it the way it is.

My Final Thought:
This is the 'Damned if I Do and Damned if I don't' principle. You are damned if you posted something positive and your are damned if you do not do anything about it or you escalate it. My best advice to the people on social media, including myself would me: watch what you are posting, because you never know what will happen next.

Entry #10: Harper and Obama and Elections vs. Lottery System

As 2014 had been a looking very promising for most people, there are some that just will not have a good year. First I will look at Canada: The Harper Years then America: Obama's Rise and Fall over his past term in 2013

To begin this chat, I will look at Canada: The Harper Years and what has Canada's Prime Minister done to Canada.

Canada: The Harper Years

Stephen Harper was elected back in February 6 2006 and to this day has been one of Canada's longest serving Prime Ministers. At first, everyone was pleased on what Harper was going to do to turn Canada around and improve our economy, create jobs, more social programs. To us, that sounded like a great promise, then in 2008, the Conservatives (Harper is part of the Conservative Party of Canada) began to promote creating new jobs out to into the Canadian economy to help build it up. As more and more Canadians went looking for the new job opportunities, including myself, we could not find any of these jobs. So this action plan the Conservatives and Harper decided to create to help get Canadians new jobs, did not exist. The ads on the radio and the television do not run anymore because people have called them on this, then in 2012-2013 came the senate scandal involving Mike Duffy, Pamala Wallin and Patrick Bruzeau. Further back ground on Duffy and Wallin, Duffy has a cottage in PEI, but HAS NOT BEEN TO PEI and his primary residence is Ottawa Wallin was born and raised in Saskatchewan but has move to Toronto and Ottawa and yet Harper put them there even when he knew about where they currently live. Duffy paid his expenses back to the people of Canada, but it was not out of Duffy's own pocket, it came from the Prime Minister's  Chief of Staff, Nigel Write. Wallin did not do the same thing, she traveled to a very expensive hotel and paid for it using tax payer dollars. This was and still is not acceptable. Then an RCMP investigation came in and Harper quickly defended himself, saying, 'I had no part in this' then got the senators suspended from Parliament. To sum the whole things up, Harper purposely and deliberately  set up Duffy and Wallin for this. Now I highly doubt they will go back to the Conservative Party because Harper, is also a control freak. Everything has to be done his way, with out any argumentation. I do not believe Harper can win the 2015 election and stay within Parliament and our Prime Minister. I can see either the Liberals or the NDP taking power and undo what Harper has done.

Next on the agenda is Obama and the United States and what has happened since his Presidency.

America: Obama's Rise and Fall

Since Barack Obama has been elected, back in 2008, everyone thought he would be a great president, and he was, up until 2012 when he decided to bring in ObamaCare and a few of his party members thought it was a great idea, until they realized the insurance company would not be making a profit. That is when the trouble began, but it got worse, Obama had a website created so American citizens could apply for ObamaCare, but the website would not work. That is when everything went downhill, since then some of the Democrats sided with the Republican party because they got worried that the citizens applying for the healthcare, would not get the care they needed.

Elections vs. Lottery System

For those who do not want to go out and vote for a lawyer, economist or businessman who claim they "are just like you", well they are not. They do not know what it is like to be a student, a single parent, etc., what elections do is allow people to address your concerns to whom ever it may concern. Why do we elect lawyers, businessmen and economists into our countries political system, it is because we do not want to do that. I am more on the side of the lottery system, this system is like putting names in a hat and drawing out a name, then you are going to parliament or Congress. This system would be better because, rather than elections, we would have a more variety of people like students, single-parents, people on welfare, etc., with these people we can see what would happen and what would get accomplished to improve our countries and our cities and our provinces and states.

My final thought:

Harper and Obama, get your acts together. People do not want to see this kind of garbage going on in the House of Commons and Parliament and in Congress. For all we care, Rob Ford could be better at both jobs (Prime Minister AND President). We do not need anymore promises being broken nor new ones being created. Get your acts together, and actually come to a compromise over these issues, then you will see  how much can get accomplished and to put elections on the back burner and elect people that are like you and me, we can discuss what we actually go through, and what compromises we can come to agree to.

Entry #9: Hockey, Politics and Philosophy

Welcome to 2014 folks! As we embrace the new year, there will be more interesting items entering your lives and unimportant items will be leaving. As we look back at the mistakes in 2013, we can learn and grow from our experiences, and we can take what we have learned and apply them to what each person's future holds for them. In order I will look at philosophy and the self then analyze what hockey and the idea of politics hold in the same way and the differences between the two.

Philosophy: The Self and Memory

An idea that we can learn from a philosophical point of view is the self. What I have learned through my philosophy class at Conestoga College, and I personally like this idea, the idea of the self evolves around the mind and memory. If there is a time we cannot remember, we are not the same person, we are a different self, an example of this ideal would be from the film Momento. In this film, the main character, Leonard, who has some memory issues, he has to write short messages down on his body and his photographs to help him jog his memory. An example of this idea, is when Leonard is talking to his friend Natalie. Leonard, tells her about a serial killer named John G., and how his wife was raped and murdered by him, this segment will later tie into memory and self. He also tells Natalie about Sammy Jankis, who had the same memory issue as himself, He could not remember the last thing he had done. The tragic tale of Sammy is that his wife could not deal with Sammy's memory issues anymore, so, her plan was to overdose on insulin because Mrs. Jankis is a type 1 diabetic. Every time Sammy finished injecting the insulin into his wife, she asked for another one because she took advantage of Sammy's condition. Since Sammy could not remember what happened, even after he finished the task, he kept on doing it. What I am trying to say is, even if you do not want to remember some past events in 2013, you are not the same self we were during 2013. 2014 is a new year, time to turn over a new leaf, start fresh, all of your mistakes in 2013 are gone, in the past, this year, you can make a big difference in yourself, the way you live, and other's as well.

That is my take on the past of 2013, the self and memory, the next topic on the agenda, is hockey and politics and how they are not so different after all.

Hockey and Politics: Not so Different after all
This little segment, I will take a look at hockey and politics and the similarities between the two. To begin the similarities, first we will look at politics and what they can provide us with, then I will look at hockey and how it provides us with entertainment and how people support other teams.
To begin, let's look at politics and how they provide us with providing services to the country. In Canada, there are 3 levels of government: Municipal, which looks after small cities like the City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo and the City of Cambridge. The next level up is Provincial, this level of government looks after the province (in Canada). The province for Canada is like a state for the United States, but there are different names we give the people we elect. For example, a provincial premier is the same as a state governor. As the premier is in charge of the province, just like how the state governor is in charge of  the state he is elected to. The final level of government is Federal, in Canada, the federal government takes care of the entire country, just like how the president of the United States is in charge. These three levels of government, have to have elected representatives for their party, for example, in Canada there are three (3) main parties, the Conservative Party, Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party. Since the Liberal party and the New Democratic Party have some similar views on changing Canada, they will be merged together to make one party, just to even things out. Hockey takes place in an arena where there are two teams: the home team and the visiting team, the fans and the refs. Canadian politics takes place on Parliament Hill, where there are three parties (remember I merged the Liberal and NDP together for this analysis). the party members and the speaker of the house. The only main difference between hockey and politics is that, during a hockey game, there are only allowed five players on the ice, but in politics, there can be more than one person talking, with the respect of others listening to that person's idea being spoken out to. Hockey teams have the captain of the team and the assistant captain,  politics there is the leader of the party, then the different cabinet ministers, just like the forwards and deface-men in hockey. When there is a debate going on in Parliament Hill, just imagine, a large room, all three parties (remember about the Liberal and NDP parties) each have a specific spot in that room, then they debate on current issues. The only difference between the two is the fighting, politics, they only fight with words, hockey players fight physically, and there are no goalies in politics. It is the same when having and argument and a debate,  both leaders begin with an opening statement on the issue, then the other members of the party have their say. It is just like passing a puck to another team member. In Politics, they do keep score, the score is the number of votes each party has.

That is my take on Hockey, Politics and Philosophy for this day.
